persons with developmental disabilities (pdd)
The Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) program is the way that the Government of Alberta ensures that adults with developmental disabilities have access to supports and funding. The program operates through the Ministry of Seniors and Community Supports under the Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) Community Governance Amendment Act 2006 and associated foundational principles and policies.
Adults with a developmental disability, their parents or guardians may need help finding information about resources, supports, or services that may be available in their community. This help will come in the form of a Community Supports Coordinator (CSC). The CSC assigned to all the individuals served by CARS is Lynn Cwiklewich (403-340-7586).
Community Supports Coordinators are staff who can provide:
- Information about living and working in the community
- Assessments of individual/family needs
- Individual lifestyle planning and information about funding
- Public awareness and education
Community Supports Coordinators operate within a specific philosophical and values base:
- All individuals are valued members of society
- People with developmental disabilities have a right to enjoy the opportunities and privileges of citizenship available to all Albertans
- Individuals should have the opportunity to exercise choice about where they live and what they want to do
- People with developmental disabilities must be involved in planning and monitoring of the supports required to meet their needs.
Community Supports Coordinators are knowledgeable about the local community and its resources, supports, and programs that are available to assist adults with developmental disabilities and their families.
They also focus on developing and arranging funding to support persons with developmental disabilities.
As a supervisor, it is important that you maintain a good working relationship with the CSC. You need to meet their expectations as far as communication, meetings, staffing hours, contact, PCP’s etc. It will be important for you to identify these expectations with the CSC and follow through with them as needed.
